The gray box at the upper left of a calendar page tells the number of days that have come before the month during the current year and the pink column down the left tells which week number this is.  I always count the week that contains January 1st as week number 1 even if it is not a full week.  International standard ISO-8601 defines week 1 of any year as the week that contains January 4th, so that a week that lies partly in one year and partly in another is assigned a number in the year in which most of its days lie.  The ISO-8601 week number is given in the light green column on the right and applies to the current week Monday through the following Sunday because ISO weeks run Monday through Sunday.
