The Soundex system, established by the National Archives to index the United States censuses beginning with 1880, converts names to codes. The first character of the code is the first character of the name. The remainder of the code is taken from the consonants of the name according to the following table. A repeated code is skipped. Some of this information was taken from http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/Genea/soundex.sh.
