The 2001 Michigan AMC 8 Report

The sixteenth American Mathematics Contest AMC 8 was held last November 13, 2001, and this report summarizes the Michigan results and statistics. Michigan again led the nation in school participation with enrollment of 184 schools and was second in student participation with 13,220 examinations ordered. Credit and thanks again go to the Exam Managers of the various schools, without whose support, cooperation and enthusiasm the exam could not be offered. We also thank the Directors of Michigan's Mathematics and Science Centers, along with several Gifted and Talented Program Coordinators, for their support for the American Mathematics Competitions.

A total of 664 Michigan students earned scores of 16 or higher and are cited in this report as 2001 Michigan AMC 8 Honor Roll Students; those with scores of 18 or higher have USA Honor Roll standing. A total of 343 students in grades six and below earned scores of 10 or higher to become 2001 Michigan AMC 8 Merit Roll Students; those with scores of 13 or higher have USA Merit Roll standing. For their achievements, all these students will be awarded certificates of merit. The top scoring Michigan students in each grade are also listed.

This year, two Michigan students, Sunil Agarwal, a 7th grader at Boulan Park Middle School in Troy, and Andrew Koltonow, an 8th grader at Berkshire Middle School in Birmingham, achieved perfect scores of 25 on the AMC 8. Each will receive a plaque for his accomplishment.

The Edith May Sliffe Award recognizes the excellence of exam managers whose students are most successful on the AMC 8. This year's Michigan recipients of the Edith May Sliffe AMC 8 awards are the following individuals, who have our congratulations and gratitude:
