These games are arranged in chronological order. I am looking forward to adding to this list!
1973-74: Michigan 43-Toledo 37. This was the very first win in the history of the Michigan varsity women's basketball program.
1975-76: Michigan 61-Michigan State 58. Wolverines vs. Spartans...nothing more needs to be said if you are a sports fan in Michigan. After several disappointing defeats, this was the first time that the Michigan women hoopsters tasted sweet victory over their major in-state rival.
1978-79: Michigan 93-Notre Dame 66. After Michigan State and Ohio State, Notre Dame is probably Michigan's next biggest rivalry. This was the first time the Wolverines beat the Fighting Irish.
1979-80: Michigan 104-Grand Valley State 75. Although GVSU may not be exactly on the same level as the Big Ten or Notre Dame, this game is significant because it was the first time that Michigan scored 100 points or more in a game.
1980-81: Michigan 79-Ohio State 71. The gridiron battles between the Wolverines and Buckeyes are legendary, and the rivalry carries over into other sports as well. This was Michigan's first women's basketball win over the team from Columbus.
1981-82: Michigan 101-Illinois 93. Two seasons after their first 100 point game, Michigan reached the century mark against a Big Ten team for the first time.
1985-86: Michigan 65-Western Michigan 50. This win was the 100th in the history of the Michigan women's basketball program.
1989-90: Michigan 71-Michigan State 65, Michigan 62-Michigan State 56. Among the many highlights of the excellent 1989-90 season was the two game sweep of the Spartans.
1989-90: Michigan 76-Illinois 62. This was the Wolverines' seventh consecutive win in Big Ten play, and another moment to remember from a great season.
1989-90: Michigan 77-Oklahoma State 68. Michigan's first ever win in the NCAA Tournament. This was especially impressive when one considers that the game was played in front of an overwhelmingly partisan crowd at Oklahoma State's arena. Carol Szczechowski led the Michigan attack with 21 points, and Tanya Powell grabbed 14 rebounds.
1991-92: Michigan 77-Western Kentucky 73. In the midst of a difficult season, the Wolverines scored an upset win over the number 11 ranked team in the nation.
1995-96: Michigan 65-Marquette 60. The 200th win in program history.
1996-97: Michigan 75-Iowa 63. The Hawkeyes had historically given the Wolverines fits, but this time Michigan got some satisfaction, beating Iowa for the first time since 1986.
1996-97: Michigan 98-Penn State 59. The addition of Penn State to the Big Ten improved the strength of an already tough conference. Michigan had never beaten the Nittany Lions until this game, which came just days after Coach Sue Guevara was promoted from interim to permanent status.
1997-98: Michigan 89-Michigan State 72, Michigan 81-Michigan State 65. Eight years after the 1989-90 team swept the Spartans, the 1997-98 squad pulled off the same feat. This was especially significant due to the fact that Michigan's Coach Guevara came to Ann Arbor after a decade on the MSU staff as an assistant to Karen Langeland. This has to rank right up there with the 1969 Michigan football win over Ohio State, in which Bo Schembechler scored an upset over his old mentor Woody Hayes.
1997-98: Michigan 79-Wisconsin 70. The Badgers were ranked #21 coming in to this game, but the Wolverines sent them packing. This was the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament. Freshman guard Anne Thorius paced the Maize and Blue with 23 points.
1998-99: Michigan 85-Ohio State 71. The Wolverines and Buckeyes battled to a stalemate in regulation time, but overtime belonged to the team from Ann Arbor. Ohio State was ranked #19 prior to this game.
1998-99: Michigan 86-Iowa 67. Besides simply being an impressive victory over a quality opponent, this also marked the 250th win in the history of the Michigan program.
1999-00: Michigan 74-Purdue 67. The Crisler Arena faithful and a national TV audience saw Michigan knock off the #12 Boilermakers. Perhaps more than any other, this game served notice that the Wolverines belong among the top teams in women's college basketball. Stacey Thomas broke the Big Ten career steals record in this game, and scored 13 points. Anne Thorius also had a big game, leading the team with 18 points.
1999-00: Michigan 86-Illinois 69. Nine days after the Purdue game mentioned above, Michigan went to Champaign and rolled over the #13 Illini. Alayne Ingram, Raina Goodlow, LeeAnn Bies, and Stacey Thomas all scored in double figures for the Wolverines. In early February, Michigan completed a season sweep of Illinois with a 70-59 win at Crisler.
2000-01: Michigan 69-Louisiana Tech 66. Michigan opened the season in dramatic fashion with a win over the #8 Techsters. This was the first time Michigan had ever defeated a Top Ten team. Ingram tied the score at 66 with less than a minute left, then Goodlow and Thorius hit free throws for the winning margin.
2000-01: Michigan 80-Iowa 78. In what was the final home game for seniors Anne Thorius and Katie Dykhouse, Michigan rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat the #25 Hawkeyes. Rookie center Jennifer Smith scored 26 points to lead the Wolverines.
2000-01: Michigan 75-Penn State 74. In the final game of the regular season, Michigan needed a win at Penn State to bolster their chances for an NCAA tournament bid. The Nittany Lions led by eight at the break and extended this to as many as 16 points in the second half. The Wolverines refused to give up, steadily chipping away at the deficit. With 6.3 seconds to go, LeeAnn Bies passed to a wide open Anne Thorius, who connected on a three point shot to win the game for Michigan. In addition to the assist on Thorius' trey, Bies also had 26 points and 13 rebounds in this game.
2000-01: Michigan 81-Virginia 71. Michigan's Cardiac Kids pulled off another thrilling second half comeback in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Alayne Ingram proved to be the hero in this game. Held scoreless in the first half, the Lansing native exploded for 27 points after the break to spark the Wolverine comeback. This victory was the first in the NCAA tourney for Coach Guevara.
2001-02: Michigan 78-Notre Dame 63. Both teams came into the game ranked nationally, Michigan at #16 and Notre Dame at #23. Most importantly, the Wolverines were looking to pay the Irish back for the previous season's NCAA second round game which Notre Dame had won quite easily. The school from South Bend then went on to win the national championship. In the rematch, Michigan started out strong, and held off all rallies to defeat Notre Dame. Alayne Ingram scored 22 points to lead her team, while LeeAnn Bies grabbed 12 rebounds and Susana Jara dished out five assists.
2001-02: Michigan 86-Louisiana State 81 (2 OT)-Michigan had moved up to spots in the national polls to #14 when they faced #21 LSU on the road. The Wolverines had trouble getting started, and fell behind by as many as 16 points. They fought back bravely, and at the end of regulation time the score was tied. One overtime period failed to decide things, so the contest continued. Finally, at the end of the second extra session, Susana Jara and Jennifer Smith connected on free throws to seal the deal. Lee Ann Bies finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, while Smith added 19 points and 10 boards. Also achieving a double-double was Stephanie Gandy, with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
2002-03: Michigan 83-Illinois 59-Towards the end of what had been a difficult season, Michigan put together their finest effort against a Big Ten opponent in 2002-03. Michigan shot 57 percent from the field to earn a win in the first round of the conference tournament. Jennifer Smith led the way with 22 points, LeeAnn Bies was not far behind with 21, and Niki Reams tallied 17. Rachael Carney helped set up a lot of that scoring with her seven assists.
2003-04: Michigan 57-Minnesota 47-Jennifer Smith, Stephanie Gandy, and Tabitha Pool led the way as Michigan defeated the nationally ranked Gophers at Crisler Arena.
2004-05: Michigan 57-California-Santa Barbara 51-Tabitha Pool had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Ta'Shia Walker scored 22 points in a win over a tough non-conference opponent who had only lost once in their last 41 home games.
